i think all the previous answers were very good but i will try to answer in a more smple way.
at first let us ask why we study interference between signals in communication?
the answer is to see if our reciever will be able to detect the transmitted signal or not.

i think if the two ends of opposite polarity they will then cancel each other in the way.
with the same polarity the will generate two magnetic fields in the same direction @ the midway pont

add the two code words then the weight of the resullt (number of ones) is the hamming distance
