Microcontroller based system seems to be the way to go, though there will be a lack of functionality.
I found another topic, almost identical to this one, and am sorry i didnt find it earlier.

i am designing and eventually am going to build a small pc (about the size of a GBASP), but am having trouble with finding a motherboard small enough. so i am gonna make a custom m'board.
any advice/good sources etc?
