could have been done with one small pic and a display ... surely far easier but ...

That is a very ingenious gadget.
I'm amazed of how practical the design is, there are many "wheel" mouses still available for pennies, and most of the time free.
In many work environments the tach is a very valuable tool.
PS: Thanks for the idea, I wanna build mine.
