routing between vlans

hello
i want to understand something , when we connect a switch before the router that is used for interconnecting the vlans , does the ports connecting to that switch is the trunking links or just access links from the different vlans
another question : do i need to use trunking links between switches when i am using router as an interconnection device.
thanks and sorry for wasting your time
