I am the "boss" in my company. I regularly ask for status updates. I want and need to know where projects are to make sure we are being productive. I think it is always fair for a boss to ask if everything is under control. If you haven't done anything yet, be honest and tell him/her. If there is a valid reason, such as you have too much on your plate, he/she will understand.
