Hi,

I am new to the automotive field, why especially controller area network used in the automotive applications. what are the major advantages of it. can any one please explain about it???

Thanks & Regards,
Chandu.Kurapati.

i think one big advantage is less wires - reduces cost and weight (improves gas mileage). pre-databus days they had to run a wire into the door for every option they wanted to control (windows, locks, mirrors etc). After the databus was being used there would be a module placed in the door with only the power and databus wires running to it instead of a dozen or more long runs of wire.

The major advantage is that its physical layer is based on dominant and recessisive bit.
So no time is wasted on collission from nodes.
this makes it ideal for real time system. apart from this there are also many advantages..like auto recovery, removal of faulty node.etc...

Automotive vechicles may have n no. of ECUs (Electronic Control Unit). (Low end vehicle may have only one ECU)
ECUs may be Power train, Body, Chasis and Network and these are the important and basic ECUs on all the vehicles.
Power train ECU will work thier dedicated functions like wise every ECU will do the dedicated functions meantime they may interact with other ECUs, for that CAN comm. is required for Data transaction. ECU may receive the data periodically from one ECU or ECU will request the other ECU to get the Data. This is the very basic overview of automotive CAN.
