Hello,

How can we calculate the unloaded Q factor of microstrip resonator say
the open loop square resonator or hair pin resonator? And also does
the same method is applicable if we want to calculate the Q factor of
slot line resonators. Can we use Ansoft HFSS's eigen mode solution to
calculate the calculate the Q factor, because it gives the resonance
frequency of different modes as well as their Q factors.

With regards,

Akhilesh Mohan

I think the best way is to calculate then with difinition.
Q=Ps/Ptotal

How can we calculate Ps and Ptotal in HFSS or analytical in case of slot resonator?

How can we find the Q factor of slot resonator using HFSS? Slot resonator would be not a single line resonator....it would be any size and shape.

eigen mode of hfss is proper for closed structure and with out excitation(ideal excitation)
i think u cant use eigen mode
u must use hfss (driven modes) and use many sweep frequency
in first frequency sweep choice large step and find resonance frequency approximatly
in other u must decrese steps

That's true that eigen mode mode solution gives Q factor and resonant frequency for closed structure...and same trends will be observe in the open structure if go through the driven mode solution and sweeping the frequency. But question is that whether this method will give correct Q factor for microstrip as well as slot line resonator.
