Hello All,

I want to create the stencil data for the production purpose, please let me what is the best way to create the data and how can i panelise the boards and generate dimensions for the PCB .

Also i need to know how can i knw what is number of pads on the top layer. I am using Protel.

any help would be great.

Thanks in advance

Re: PCB Stencil Data

They are not called stencils, they are called photoplots. The photoplot is used to expose light sensitive chemicals applied to the copper so the board can be etched. Photoplots are produced from files called "Gerber" files.

Protel can automatically produce Gerber files. The specific procedure depends on what version of the software you are using. If you tell us what version you have, I can tell you what steps to take.

Dimensions for the board should be placed on a mechanical layer. Again, Protel has automated tools with which can can do that. However, you need to place the dimensions just as you would using a CAD program.

Panelizing the board can be done in a CAM editor, or by using a board array in the newer versions of Protel. Once again, I would need to know what version of the software you are using.

The number of pads on a board is one of the outputs available in the board report. Look in the "Reports" menu for the option.

Re: PCB Stencil Data

Stencils are the same as the mask layer. When I have had stencils made, I just output the mask layers to gerber files where surface mount components are. Companies take those and laser drill out the stencils without any other information (at least for me anyway).

If you want to panelize your design you may need to find out what the maximum size is allowed for your stencil and then use some guidelines listed by others to do it in Protel. I haven't used that software much.
