digital vco

Colleagues,

Is it possible to make a voltage-controlled oscillator with digital components (with the exception for the varactor and passives, of course)? I know that an RC or LC oscillator can be made with CMOS inverters, but I don’t know how to connect the varactor into it. The frequency remains an open question, so please assume that it’s low enough.

Schematics, ideas, references and inspirations are highly appreciated!

Regards,
Nick

if you want to use a pure digital vco, u can use some kind of a latch structure. You can refer to the book, cmos design and layout by baker,li,boyce. In the chapter called pll design, you will find this circuit. You can also use a simple current starved inverter which is very simple to design.

Thanks
Amarnath
