Guys, I understand that to install Cadence 5141 on SuSE 10.2, I'd have to downgrade TAR to a lower version. How do I go about that? Everytime I try to get rid of the current version (1.15), it tells me that other programs are dependent on it. And when I use Yast to install an older RPM, it doesn't show up in Yast's list of programs that are named TAR. It only shows the 1.15 version. Please help me!

Downgrading TAR?

ou don't need to downgrade tar to install enything! Tar hasn't changed sence the 80's.
You can not uninstall tar as it is at the heart of the nix Worls
But if you can get your hand on an rpm package with an earlyer version of tar here's how to install - downgrade it:
Install kpackage (it's not part of suse eny more so get it off the web)
Open kpackage and drob the older tar rpm, in the new window enter the root passwort, select allow downgrade and hit install.
Well That shuld be it.
or another more destructive way to downgrade tar:
Login as root, get an older binary version of tar that you wan't to install rename it to older_tar, find the installed tar:
>whereis tar;
/usr/bin/tar

>su
>pass:****
>cp /usr/bin/tar /home/<you>/original_tar /
>cp /home/<you>/older_tar /usr/bin/tar
>exit

reboot your system or logout so that the linux kernel wuld free eny open incidents of the older tar.
do not downgrade your version of tar

Re: Downgrading TAR?

Thanks, but I've got a new problem.

I've done everything, and installation of cadence went fine. But now when I start SuSE, it tells me that it can't start kdeinit, and for me to check my installation. What went wrong??!???!

Help!

Downgrading TAR?

I did write:
do not downgrade your version of tar

boot Suse go to runlevel 3 "init 3", and restore tar, search for a newer version of cadence or a patch.

Re: Downgrading TAR?

I don't think the problem is the older TAR. Apparently, kdeinit won't run if I put something in .bashrc (if I put it in /root, root won't boot. Likewise for /home/user). When I remove it, it boots fine.

Downgrading TAR?

What do you put?
That shouldn't happen.
by the by Cadence won't run in Linux's with 2.6 version kernel, only 2.4. There is a way to fool it it's described in this forum search for it.

Re: Downgrading TAR?

hai ,

if u want to install any tar file by default it will be in /usr/ folder but better always following command u can configure to install in ur directroy so that if u wnat to delete just delete that dir . so try to use follow command

after extracting tar ex: cadence.tar to extract to /home/download/cadence
then
mkdir /home/cadence // ur directory where u install
cd /home/cadence // enter to dir check for configure file
./configure install=/home/cadence // mention ur dir where u install
./make // install memo shows ur dir
./make check //option to check
./make install

NOte : after u install a executable will be in /home/cadence/bin/ so u have to adda link to /usr/bin other wise u have to use command to excutie is /home/cadence/bin/<excutable>

have a nice day

Re: Downgrading TAR?

Like I know you can not install cadence on suse 10.2

Re: Downgrading TAR?

I got it done!!!!! I had to install SuSE 10.0 though, since I didn't have the updates and hotfixes that would've enabled me to run Cadence on SuSE 10.2 (The computer admin at my Uni got it running on 10.2, but only by using the updates). Running on 10.2 gave me error messages concerning something about shared libraries ".so.2", so I gave up on that.

What surprised me was that I didn't even need Kpackage to downgrade Tar. All I did was install tar-1.33.25, copied the installed folders on the default tar in /usr/bin/tar. And so far, I can get into KDE with no problems. Oh yeah, the previous problem concerning not being able to get into KDE - that was actually because I added some lines into .bashrc, and not because I downgraded Tar. I don't know why, but those environment lines stuffed up .kdeinit. So all I did was add those lines into .bashrc_profile instead, and source cadence from there.

Of course, I also had to use Kernel 2.4.1, and the usual edited stuff. Man, 5 days of nightmares! But it was worth it. Thanks for all the help guys.

Downgrading TAR?

Where did you download Cadance from?

Re: Downgrading TAR?

That's classified information. :)

Anyway, it's on the net if you look really hard for it.

Downgrading TAR?

I know where and how to get it :p.

haven't done much electronics lately
But is it worth getting?

Re: Downgrading TAR?

Do you need it? If your answer is no, then it's not worth the hassle.
