Hi,
I would like to know what does 256 * 2 Mux 8 mean?
I know that 256 numbr of bits and 2 words which makes the memory size.
But what does the term Mux 2,mux 4 ,mux 16 mean??
Does it mean mux 2 can handle 2 bit cells?Mux 16 can handle 16 bit cells??

I would like to have more information on this.Please help me.

Thanks,
swaroopa

Re: 256 * 2 Mux 8???

Hello!
First you have to learn what is a multiplexer:

A multiplexer is a device that selects one of many data-sources and outputs that source into a single channel.

This sounds ambigous for me and I can not answer.

Mux 2 - is a mux with 2 data inputs ,so it has 1 selection input for choosing betwen the 2 inputs, and 1 output;
Mux 4 - is a mux with 4 data inputs ,so it has 2 selection input for choosing betwen the 2 inputs, and 1 output;
Mux 16 - is a mux with 16 data inputs ,so it has 4 selection input for choosing betwen the 2 inputs, and 1 output;

Re: 256 * 2 Mux 8???

I know the basic concept of what a mux means.
What ive inteded to as was in terms of memory architecture.

We use the terms there as mux1 mux4,mux16 etc.
It has something to do with selecting the memory bit cells.
Hope i am clear now.

256 * 2 Mux 8???

Mux 8 means group the words in 8 bit bytes. Since you are specifying 256*2, that is divisible by 8, if you had specified something else, you might need a smaller bit size because the word size may not be divisible by the group size.

256 * 2 Mux 8???

i think the memory has 256*2 units,every units is 8 bit

Re: 256 * 2 Mux 8???

Hi,

I Think it is the combination of two stages, each stage is of 256 inputs and 8 selection bits per stage.

If you need more details, contact me.

Re: 256 * 2 Mux 8???

256*2 Mux8 means:
memory has 256 wors, has 2 bits per word and is implemented using 8to1 column MUX.
Therefore no. of cols is 2*8 =16
no. of rows is 256/2 =128

Re: 256 * 2 Mux 8???

Hi phy_designer ,

I have a doubt here :-
Memory is 256x2 = 512 bits. If column mux is 8 then columns will be 16.
Then rows should be 32 .(32x16 =512).
Is it so ???
