how to generate colour video

Hi there,

I would like to achieve a goal related with tv and mcu.I would like to build a visual equalizer uses tv screen and common mcu's like microchip.I heard 4 mhz pic's are not fast enough to make a colourful images on tv screen.I want to ask if 20mhz mcu's like 16F877A-20 is fast enough to make colourful images on tv screen. If so, i want to build a vu-meter on tv screen. But how? Any ideas? How to generate video signals using MCU?

generating video signals

I saw a very old (probably 1995 or 96) article in circuitcellar once in which some guy made a weather station using a PIC at 20MHz to generate a video signal. But there were severe limitations. It was black and white and the resolution was extremely poor. Remember that 1 scan line of TV is about 65us. SO you have to put all the horizontal dots in that time.

The better way is to use an OSD (on-screen display IC) like NEC upd6453 to do all the dog-work. It is easy to interface, costs very little and produces reasonable text output in color.

gerate video signals

A very clever design by ricci bitti.

tv color gen howto

an mcu (even 20mhz 16f877) is not fast enought to generate color video, but enought to generate b&w video.
see attached examples for more explainations.

mcu video signal

Project contained in videoi.pdf has bugs in MCU routine. Produced interlaced video is not correct. It has error in frame timing.

osd ubicom

Hello Borber,
Do you have the corrected routine.
Please share.
Thanks.

mcu generate text

Hi pico,
sorry I have no improved routine. I e-mailed to author but haven't got any answer.

how to generate tv lines on videos

Hi,

Thanks a lot for your replies, but i want to know this. How many MIPS can achieve this goal? (Minimum) Can any microchip family product do this?

No the PIC is not fast enough, that's why Rickard moved from the PIC to an Ubicom SX for the color version of the video game.
Read page 13 and 14 of this document: www.rickard.gunee.com/projects/video/sx/howtocolor.pdf

The Ubicom SX (former Scenix) is a PIC16C5X clone with much higher MIPS performance (50 MIPS).

generating video signals with pic

You can find this topic on circuit cellar, too
(AVR was used to gennerate TV signal.)
