difference betwwen vbr and mbr

I have some basic douts about FAT16 fs.
1What is the difference berween the Master boot record and volume boot record on a FAT16 file system....can anyone clarify?
)
i think both of them reside at address 0(first sector).Boot secor stores the boot code (with other things such as sectors per cluster etc) as does VBR.So what distinguishes the VBR from MBR

2.furthermore what does byte offset means ...does it specify the address on the disk?

3.Why is the root direcory region limited in size?

4.What are the steps involved in reading a file from a FAT16 formatted sytem(i mean like first we have to read the volume boot recordetc.)

These may seem to be very basic queries but i have just started with fat16 .I searched on the net but couldnt get a hang of these things.would be great if someone can clarify these doubts

difference between mbr and vbr

I think master boot record resides at sector 0 of the physical disk. THe volume boot record is at the sector 0 of the partition. THere can be more than one partitions on a phyiscal disk and each partition starts with a volume boot record.

There is a utility called WinHexEditor. Using this, you can differentiate between the two. You can open the phsyical disk or a logical drive (C,D etc) and see that the BR of both is different although it shows Zero sector in both cases
