doubt in convolutional encoding

the 3 parameters in convolutional encondin are
k=number of input bits
n=number of output bits
m=number of memory registers
k/n is code rate,constraint length=??

in some sites constraint length is given as k*(m-1) and in some sites it is given as k*m

kindly tell which one is correct
 

K = m + 1

constraint length is the no. of regs in your encoder.take this exp, constraint length of 9 corresponds to
inputbit+8 regs.

the contraint is numbre of sampling or operation can do the encoding so the correct contraint is k*(m-1).
