Can LM 741 op-amp be used as a single supply comparator i.e you ground the negative supply pin so that your o/p switches between 0v and 5v or are there any other op-amps to satisfy this purpose.........if present pls give thier numbers.....

741 comparator

Ya IC 741 can be use with single power supply , but u need large amount of capacitors .

so better u use a single supply op amp such as LM324 - 4 op amp in single IC

lm741 comparator circuit

Be carefull when using opamps as comparators.
1. Most opamps inputs are not designed to include the supply rails in their nominal voltage range. Some even reverse the output when their voltage input range is exceeded.
2. Most opamps are not rail to rail output so be ready to have an offset at your output.
3. Opamps are by nature single supply devices (there is no "ground" connection)
4. Just 5V supply is too low for 741 because the output cannot swing close to the supply rails and the "digital" output levels it produces may be misinterpreted but digital inputs.
5. Better use rail to rail input-output opamps like the LMC6482 dual from National
6. Why not use a real comparator?
