hello,
what is the main benefit of modulation ?

also what are the main advantages , disadvantages of ASK , FSK , PSK .... which make me choose one over the other ?
 

1. transmission channels are not ideal in all frequencies. in order to mach the freq. band of the signal to the part of the transmission channel impalse res. which is ideal, we use modulation

2. useing one channel to send more than one signal, each signal is modulated with a particular carier

Different Modulations have different BER in fixed SNR and different bit rate
 

Modulation are responsible for following advantages.
1. reduction in size of antenna (ant. size is proportional to wavelengh)
2. frequency translation
3. noise reduction

If you need more clarification about these points. Feel free to ask.
 

Noise mainly effects the amplitude of a carrier. The most popular method of modulation is PSK and FSK, where the information is within the Phase and Frequency of the carrier. ASK - is a waste of time.
