Hello!!!

May I have any information or e-book about (IDE) parallel ATA/ATARI protocol? I want to control my old HDD with my Spartan FPGA but I don’t have any idea about ATA!!!
Is it deficit to control it?

Re: ATA/ATARI Protocol

check opencores for their ide controller project

Re: ATA/ATARI Protocol

Yes, but there is no documentation about ATA. I have to read some documentation first and then use the ATA core.

Re: ATA/ATARI Protocol

Thank you!!!

But know I have got ant other question. What is the ATA/ATARI–3 or ATA/ATARI-4 or ATA/ATARI with packet interface 7 etc. I have to read the latest on?

ATA/ATARI Protocol

Well,
that depends on what you're going to design.

There are ATA(HDD), ATAPI(CD,DVD,MO) devices
So, if your device is trying to access CDROM - Spec over ATA/ATAPI-4 is required

And, there are 3 kind of access timing
PIO, (S)MDMA, UDMA
Speed is also different...

My suggestion is read ATA-2 spec first, that's enough for old HDD if you don't care speed.

Re: ATA/ATARI Protocol

And also I have to read the FAT32 documentation. Basically I want to build a MP3 player with HDD and CD-ROM using FPGA.

Re: ATA/ATARI Protocol

get hold of this book
The SCSI Bus and IDE Interface Protocols, applications and programming

ATA/ATARI Protocol

CD-ROM will need ATAPI command, see ATA/ATAPI-4 spec.
At least you have to read following command

Identify-Packet Device
Packet
Service
