I am trying to build a momentary switch built with either photocells or IR detectors that will close a circuit when the IR beam is broken. Do know if I can do this fairly cheaply?

Hi

it depends on the environmet where your sensor is going to work, I mean you will have problems with visible light from the sun or common lights. So I would suggest to get one set of transmitter and receiver IR leds which include an optical filter (like the dark windows in the TV receiver and remote control). if you have that sensor working the rest seems to be easy.

Cheers

use a TSOP 1738 receiver which operates at 38jHz

search d net for datasheets......very easy to use

and for d transmitter u can use IR LEDs u can generate 38kHz freq using 555 timer as astable multivibrator or retriggerable monoshot having small time delay

use bursts of these 38kHz freq signals aimed at d TSOP 1738 sensor.

Re: Help Please. I need to build an Infrared detector switch

The environment that this momentary switch will go in is inside. The plan was to mount the IR LED in the middle of a model railroad track and trigger a set of lights on the layout. I was hoping that the model would be able to ride over the IR LED and trip the lights by closing the circuit. I'm leaning toward the IR detectors because I believe photocells would not work if the layout is in the dark. (i.e the lights in the room are turned off)
Can I make a IR Switch that will close a curcuit when the beam is broken. I only need the IR beam to go a couple of inches.

Thanks much. Do you know of a website or a place to find a schematic for a curcuit like the one I've described?
