which IRLED+photo diode combination should I use for
edge detection I got 5-7cm clearance b/w the robot body & ground
plzzzz tell me the part no. that is easily available in market & inexpensive

5-7 cm is a little bit to high .. if you consider an extension "arm" you can use QRB1134 device ..
QRB1134 Reflective Object Sensor

The QRB1134 consists of an infrared emitting diode and an NPN silicon phototransistor mounted in a black plastic housing. The phototransistor responds to radiation from the emitting diode only when a reflective object passes within its field of view. The sensor is optomized to detect objects within 0.2" of the sensor. In robotics, this sensor is often used as an edge detector or a line following sensor.

Here is its data sheet:

5-7 cm is a fixed distance no alternation can be made + no extension "arm" can be used .is there any way to use such a sensor which fulfill these requirement ??????????
let me know the part no.

You could try to make your own sensor by simply using an IR Led and a photo diode and modulate the signal sent out by the IR led. That way you minimise the effect of ambient light (the reason the sensor is only accurate to 0.2")
