a begginer question about math and DSP

math for dsp

hi evreyone,
guys what field of mathmatics should i be looking at to get a firm grisp on DSP??
Calculus ,linear algebra ....etc?
i got a book called Calculus for Swokoski ,don't know the pre calculus overview chapter is not letting me exhale well.i would be gratefull for any usefull hints.

math in dsp

If you look at any DSP book you will find summation , Intergration , complex exponentials, trignometric functions, some linear algebra and probability theory. You won't need the last two till you reach the advanced topics. So you don't really need to study math in details to understand DSP. My advice for you is to spend 30 mins to revise Euler formula (complex exponential = cosx+jsinx).

good to start DSP you follow good books and understand fundamentals
 

What you'll need in order to understand ant to know DSP is Discrete math, Fourier Transformation (fot the DFT, FFT etc.. stuff) and of course, the foundemantal math which include trigo. and a little bit calculus math.

as mentioned before, you''l need some Exponential understanding (when you will leran the Z-Transform).

About the Calculus math, It'll be needed if you gonna 'upgrade' your self from DSP to PSP (Picture Signal Processing), because there you must use multiple integral (double integral form in the FT) in order to make any picture processing.

Now for the punch line: When I got my first DSP lesson I held in my hand the Proakis Book : Digital Signal Processing ---- try to get it; its very good book which covers all the basics and continue to the advenced topics.
I think it's gonna be hard for you so I recommend you to get, some how, the following book:
Digital Filtering: An Introduction by Edward P. Cunnigham.
This excellent book covers in the first two chapters, in very clearly way, the basics of the DSP. (After the 2 chapters there is some theroy of filter in an analog manner which cont. to the digital design - its not relavent for you, in your case, but its worth to see)

It is better to first you should revise the basics before going into the advanced maths. for that you should take help from the college math books and also the basic / intro chapters on integral and complex maths, probability.
and always keep these books with you for refernce.
 

Calculus and Linear Algebra are both important topics for DSP and Statistics and Probability for advanced DSP

if you want to learn DSP you have to know maths well.calculus 1 will be a basic.calculus 2 isn't so necessary.probabilty and random processes and signals and systems will be required too.in signal and systems you can learn fourier and laplace transforms will be useful for future...

u r right. u should start with calculus.kwosowski is a good book. learn integration and infinite series from it. inshallah u will get grisp on DSP also
 

Calculus, especially integration. Fourier and LaPlace transforms, and learn complex numbers inside and out. And learn it from an engineering perspective, learn to analyze the hell out of electric circuits with LaPlace analysis, steady state, transient, poles and zeros. Then you are on your way. Learning DSP and not knowing your Analog roots is like trying to play hockey without knowing how to tie your laces.
 

to get good knowledge in adaptive singnal processing you should know the basic of statistical theory communication so read probability randam variables and random signal principles by peyton Z. peebles Jr.
and and functions and matrix theory and vector algebra must
