Which 8 bit microcontroller is the best for industrial applications?
Also which one is bug free and which brand?
If you want to make a mini plc which micro you want to use?
In plc's which micros using?

8051 vs pic

Any of these will do the job well for simple embedded applications.

The 8051 has been around forever and there are many variations of it available from multiple sources.

The pic has been around for almost as long. There are many variations of it too, but it is single sourced by Microchip.

The avr is newest. It runs circles around the pic at the same clock speed since it is a true risc, while the pic consumes 4 clocks per "risc" instruction. The avr instruction set is more powerful than pic or 8051. It is also single sourced.

Anyway, but to choose one cheaper.

Depend on your project and quantity , size , time

if your project quite complex choose avr, fast , good and cheap ice, and then have free c compiler

for size pcb , power and performance consider pic

for large quantity and rich indrustry choose 8051 because compiler and tools cost so much.

Both AVR and microchip have CAN versions of their controller like 90s128CAN and 18F4550 ... but i think AVR is better.

of course, using PIC is like riding Donkeys >>>SLOOOOWWW
AVR are the Formula 1 CAR.
With proper design , AVR can be used in Industrial environment!
ZELIO PLC (from Schneider Telemecanique) uses AVR MEGA128
as the HEART, They are professionally designed by the Experts.
Then PIC are found in toys, bah! what a shane .

If you try this route you will not get far - The latest Atmel IDE I downloaded will not install - it requires a previous version 4.10 which is not available!!!!

In my experience Support from the Manufacturer is most important
Microchip is very helpful towards small quantity users and there is a huge amount of data available on the use and application of their µCs.
Saves time == money /=stress

for eaier use i preffer 8051 family & KEil C compiler.For speed my choice is avr.

But Maxim Produced 8051 compatible microcontrollers with twice speed of avr!

(Single Clock/Machine Cycle,Maximum Clock is twice of avr family)

Check Maxim Company : DS89C420...DS89C450.

pic versus 8051

AVR is my choice because its has facilities same as pic with more speed. Second is the ISP programmer without any wires. See the programmer

Sounds a bit annoying... most of you are talking about PIC as being for amateurs, and not suitable for industrial applications...Any way, I saw the PIC18 family used in medical instrumentation.

If someone is used to PICs he says PICs are the best, and vice versa....Which is not logical....

Ok, Microchip has released PIC18/30 which are really good art of work...There are more software tools for PICs, learning curve is much more faster, contrary to AVR. Atmel has alot of absolute parts, so I can't trust them in my design for the long term. Microchip still provides 20 years old PICs. And there are rarely absoluted parts in microchip. Microchip cares about their customers, and their site is easy to surf, seriously contrary to atmel.

On the other hand...Speed is not every thing.....comparing speeds between AVRs and PICs is not a professional thingy to do...in pratical world, embedded systems spend most of the CPU time waiting for an input, or an interrupt to process, so speed is not that really important.

Another thing I hate about AVRs is that they don't have equal latency for interrupts serving....What I hate about PICs is that I can't obtain samples !!

I am amused when folks talk of speed - based on Clock frequency.
Intel versus AMD is a classic example. AMD=less clock,less power, more MIPS/µW
Pic clock is divided by 4 and used for each machine cycle.
AVR effectively uses an internal multiplier to generate its fetch and execute cycles unseen to the user. This does not necessarily make it faster.
Speed to market is far more important.

Generally AVRs are bigger silicon processors than Pics so you would expect it to process more.

With global warming, how do they compare on a MIPS/µW basis?

AVR claim RISC - well if it is reduced I would hate to see the Full AVR Instr. Set. - their are pages and pages of the short form description.

Comparing like-with-like is very difficult.

Finally, the voice of reason reappears on this thread. I checked this out yesterday, and just got upset and left, when I read the 15 year old's opinion of how PICs are for toys, and 'real experts' 'professionally design' the AVR. It sounded like "my pp is bigger than anyone's." I was beginning to think this board was a juvinalian playground.

I think the AVR is a good micro, but would not recommend it for starters. No one has made mention of the difficulty with configuration mistakes, and the problems they can cause. I don't think the AVR has quite as much support as the PIC. As for the speed thing, how many MIPs can the dsPIC turn? It is quite fast, as if speed has anything to do with anything.

Like Ian said, "go with what you know, or throw the dice.."

avr car dashboard

The best is to study both (PIC, AVR) I like both.

I've seen a lot of car dashboard computer and industrial systems, where approx. 70% is Motorola, 20 % TI, 10% other (NEC, Hitachi, ...) NO AVR, NO PIC :(
Do not ask, why.
