In a Parallel Plate Capacitor, if effect of fringing is taken into consideration, would the capaciatnce increase? Why?

Re: Capacitance

Capacitance is \[\epsilon A/d\] where \[\epsilon\] is permittivity of the dielectric material, \[A\] is the cross sectional area where the E-field lines cross and \[d\] is the distance between the plates. If fringing is taken into account, the effective cross-sectional area which the E-field crosses is larger than the cross-sectional area of the plates themselves. So the effective cross-sectional area in the capacitance equation is larger and therefore capacitance is larger. Does that help you out?

Best regards,

In general, the effects of fringing for parallel plate capacitors can be neglected as long as both the width and height of the capacitor are significantly larger then the plate separation, a condition that is easily achieved here. However, the presence of etch holes contributes additional fringing that will always be present as their presence increase along with the area of the capacitor.

The increase in capacitance due to fringing is proportional to
the periphery of the structure. Therefore, structures with large
periphery per unit area are desirable.

Re: Capacitance

u an refer to any analog electronics books like milman halkies

Re: Capacitance

Yes, the total capacitance increase, but usually fringe capacitance is neglected because is a very small value!!
