Hi All,

I need to find a 16 bit device which has at least 12 analog inputs (12 channel mux) plus 6 pwm outputs (my application is a 6 channel maximum power point tracker) and a few other more common features (i2c, a multiplier, risc architecture and so on).

I would very much appreciate any comments as I don't even know well the different manufacturers of 16 bit mcus :( Even just a list of 16 bit mcu manufacurers worth having a look at would be great to have to start my investigation.

So far, I've had a look at Microchip devices. They have 16 channel adc devices available but 5 pwm outputs seems to be the maximum. I've also looked at TI's MSP430s, with upto 7 pwm outputs available (timer B7 module) but a maximum of 8 input adc!

What's a good next step? How about Motorolas, any good for my application? Also I've heard of a few other MCU manufacturers such as Hitachi, Nec, Oki but I'm absolutely clueless.

Thank you very much for any comments.

All the best,

Alex

Re: Choose a device

Hi Alen,
I can suggest a 8051 core with 16 bit ADC, RISC architecture and all that.
Even 6 PWM output's can be generated using Programmable counter array.

But may be you have to put an 16 to 1 Analog MUX or (two 8 to 1 AMUX. since there are 2 16 bit ADC's)

This uC full name is C8051F060. If you use this uC make sure that you use an external reference for lesser noise. This uC is manufactured by SiLABS
you can visit www.silabs.com for the data sheet.

This uC has two DAC's also. But check out the cost. It may be slightly overpriced
In india i bought it for 1800Rs ( around 36 $)

regards,
Sudhir

Re: Choose a device

Hi

You can use ARM best core LPC213x, he have it all plus many more feature

and lower in cost from the 8051Fxxx

But it's a 32 bit controller

All the best

Re: Choose a device

Guys,

Your input is truly appreciated. I'll have a detailed look at the recommended devices to see if they fit.. I don't mind going for 32 bits really apart from the extra power consumption often associated to it (this is a solar / battery powered application) so it's probably a good suggestion.

Thank you!

Re: Choose a device

Hi Alex,
Try the new DSPIC range of motor control ic from Microchip, 4-5 pairs pwm,16 bit,6-10 channel adc 10-12 bits,120 mips operation.Optimised for c arch, pll, control algo for pwm,pid,spi,i2c,ausart, flash eeprom. Chose the IC to match your need.Demo version of c 30 compiler free download.
Hope this helps.

Re: Choose a device

Cheers Alliegro.

I have just realized I have a bigger problem really: the device must be cmos otp rather than flash :( This is because of reliability (susceptibility to radiation in particular).

Cheers,

Alex

Re: Choose a device

Try the new 16-bit PIC24 series of microcontrollers from microchip. They have a 1.5 Megasamles/sec A-D and it is probably 12-channels.
