DTMF Questions

Hi,

I am making a small project identifying signal from my phone to my pc via modem. I am told that this can be achieved using DTMF where certain tone generates specific frequency that enables the buttons to be identified. can anybody tell me the fundamentals of workings of such DTMF ? perhaps book recomendation and ebooks ? thank you.
