i dont exactly understand the meaning of layer 2 and layer3 Switching..CAn someone help me ? what's the difference between 'em..?

Generally Speaking of switching in telecommunication networks, which Layer switching is actually ment..?

Hi,
Hope the following helps:

Layer 2 Switch: A network device that forwards traffic based on MAC layer (Ethernet or Token Ring) addresses.

layer 3 switch: A network device that forwards traffic based on layer 3 information at very high speeds.

Traditionally, routers, which inspect layer 3, were considerably slower than layer 2 switches. In order to increase routing speeds, many "cut-through" techniques were used, which perform an "inspect the first packet at layer 3 and send the rest at layer 2" type of processing.

multilayer switch (MLS) is a computer networking device that switches on OSI layer 2 like an ordinary network switch and provides extra functions on higher OSI layers.


Layer 3 Switching

The major difference between the packet switching operation of a router and that of a Layer 3 switch is the physical implementation. In general-purpose routers, packet switching takes place using a microprocessor, whereas a Layer 3 switch performs this using application specific integrated circuit (ASIC) hardware.
