equation losses buck converter

Hello,

I am using LM2596 (pkg-TO263) switcher. Vin = 12V and Vout = 5.289V. I want to calculate power dessipation for the same. How can i do it? Whether i need to consider external inductor, diode and cap??
What is the formula to calculate same?

regards
niks

buck converter formula

The formula is really adding all the losses in the P/S: swithching transistor, inductor, diode, and if you need to, input and output caps.

The transistor conduction loss is simply Irms²*Rdson
For the inductor, its approximately Iout²*Rind
For the diode, it's approximately Idave*Vdiode
For the caps, Icaprms²*ESR

For formulas, see this www.national.com/an/AN/AN-1246.pdf
