seal ring layout

you can find it in layout design rule.

seal ring die

It used to prevent the cutter to break th die.

smic seal ring

In addition to prevent the damaging during die cutting, seal ring is also used to prevent moisture penetration form die boundary. You can use all layer from N-WELL, OD, PLOY, contact, M1, VIA1 ... up to top metal to surround your chip. Roughly20um ~ 50um width is enough. Every foundary has their recommendation. You can find it in layout rules.

seal ring rule

yhe, seal ring is mainly to prevent damage during die cutting. for chartered/umc/smic/nec the seal ring width is 10um ,spacing from circuit is 15um
