MAX232E as a +-10V power supply

MAX232E and power supply

I found that it's possible to use this component design for RS232 transmission as a small power supply system. You apply +5v and get +/- 10V output. I can't find how much can be the output current from this supply.

I think using the MAX232 as a dual supply generator will not give accurate results as the ic originally has to supply a voltage between +3v and +25v to indicate a logic LOW state, and voltage between -3v and -25v to indicate a logic HIGH state.

With a MAX232N from TI You can get :

-7v @ 1mA
-5V @ 10mA

Try with your own Max232, caps......
