AC to DC Power Supply Design Project

Hello! I have to design a AC to DC power supply for my power electronics class. The only requirement is that the input is 120VAC, 60Hz and the ouput is DC - it can be anything!

I understand that I'll first have to start off with some sort of transformer and a full-wave rectifier and then some sort of converter? Is that right?

This also has to be for a specific application. Does anyone have any ideas? Any schematics would be a huge help too!!! Thanks in advance.
 

to meet your requirements all you need is 4 diodes & a really big Capacitor. 5 parts, maybe 2$ to build.

form the diodes into a "full wave rectifier" form and put the capacitor on the output. the capacitor is what will give you the DC output.

of course, you will not get a pure DC output, there will be some voltage ripple, but even the most expensive AC/DC converters always have some ripple. since your requirements do not specify the minimum ripple, then it is not a concern to you!

Here is an example of, if not the simplest, then very simpple power supply ..
In your case you will have to select a transformer rated for 120Vac ..
Also, you may add another 0.1µF ceramic capacitor between (1) and (2) of the voltage regulator ..

I had tried it .. Wonderfull many thanks ..

But some links don't work .. and many circuits have no explaination such as the Frequency meter with PIC 16F84 one ..

anyway .. it is a great page ..

IanP - I was looking at circuits like that but I have to design it from scratch. What could I replace with the chip?

So when is that going to happen - after you're given the answer?
 

First what you should do is draw schematic of the power supply circuit. Second find the values for components. And third find the components and solder them. Now you can build unregulated power suply or regulated. unregulated is very simple Transistor, bridge rectifier, and a cap. For regulated you just connect a voltage regulator ( if you want to impress your teacher use lm317). you also should keep in mind the current that it is required to provide. And if you want to create some quality power supply consider using an RL filter. Schematics are available all over the internet all you have to do is calculate the values for you design specs and find the required components.
