difference between choke and inductor

Hi Friends,

I am now designing a Buck DC/DC Regulator. You know, I must choose an inductor, which should have high current capability, for the regulator. So power inductor seems to be the right one for this application. But I also find some Choke, which can burden high current, and in that chip’s datasheet, it said that the Choke can also be use in DC/DC converter. So my question is that: Choke can be used in DCDC converter circuit instead of Power Inductor? And What’s the substantial difference between Choke and Power Inductor? Thanks.

Best Regards,

difference between rf inductor and power inductor

Choke is a term used in RF for
inductors that inhibit the flow of
high frequency or transient to or
from power supply. Usually is very
small(phisically), so I doubt you can
use for high currents as in regulators.

difference between dc choke and power inductor

There is no difference between the two. Some people use the terms interchangeably. Choke refers to the ability to block an AC component. In a buck, that function belongs to the inductor, hence the name choke. Since it has to be able to conduct high currents, it is also a power inductor.
