difference between sdi and asi

What is the main difference between SDI and DVB-ASI?

Does anybody have an answer to this post "what is the main difference between SDI and DVB-ASI?"

I'm not an expert in this field but I think SDI is the 'raw' serial data and DVB-ASI is the same data in a container so it can be streamed through IP networks. I know an expert (he designs SDI mixing desks in his sleep!) so if you don't get a definitive answer from anyone else, I'll ask him.

Brian.

Ok, so can a stream in SDI format input into an ASI port?

I'm not sure, I think it's necessary to reformat it first.
Click on "view profile" underneath this message then on "home page" to go to one of my web sites. In the bottom corner you will see "send me e-mail" . Click on it and leave your personal email address, I'll pass it on the the expert to see if he can help. I won't name him here but if you are in the broadcasting business you almost certainly use some of his equipment.
Sorry, but I've turned off the private message facility on Edaboard after getting too many private questions that should really be answered in the forum.

I have forwarded your details to my expert friend, hopefully he will contact you directly.

SDI is Serial Digital Interface which is an UNCOMPRESSED format for carrying a single (A/V) program.

ASI is Asynchronous Serial interface that carries COMPRESSED data that may include multiple programs.

The two may both use BNC connectors, and may both be serial digital streams, but they are not interchangable. You can't feed SDI out of one device and put it into a device which expects to see ASI or vice versa.
