What happens to the light energy lost in distuctive interference? The question arises from this image

The dots seen in a spot created by a laser pointer contains several thousand dots. Is this due to constructive interference?

Your illustration dose not show. In general, you can think of the same effects as in gain antennas. The waves are phased to subtract in some directions and add in others. The total power radiated is the same; it is just concentrated in a smaller solid angle.
