How does a metal fuse work in memory repair?

Is it differs from the traditional fuse used for protection?

Many years ago before electrically erasable PROMs there were fused ones. The fuses were usually polysilicon. The PROM was programmed by blowing the fuses. There was a reliability problem as you could imagine with the material from the blown fuses being spread all over the IC surface.
