Question regd. Structured ASIC!!

i was recently watching a Synplicity Video on Structured ASIC which they call it ISSP. They said that ISSP-1 which is first generation Structured ASIC, has 200Mhz core and 300Mhz local frequency, where as ISSP -90nm has 340Mhz global and 500 Mhz Local frequency.

My question is,
what is this local and Global Frequency? and why is there a difference in it ?
 

if u distrubuting clock in modules vise. example ur design contains A,B,C
where A is operating 200MHZ, B is 350Mhz,C is 400Mhz
but total operating speed is 350Mhz(assume)
this type architectire is GALS

but still what do u mean when u say total operating speed is 350Mhz. ? means the main module which has these other 3 modules in it?
 

You can operate different modules at different frequencies and then make them communicate asynchronously.. the local domans would operate at the same frequency.. and the different subdomains would operate at different frequencies.

this design is called globally asynchronous and locally synchronous design.

this is advantages to attain a low power design.. to reduce power wasted per cycle.

how does global frequency and local frequency are related to GALS arun?
i think they are different.....
 

also , your statement is contradicting itself because, u are saying "You can operate different modules at different frequencies " which means that they are not locally synchronous.........
 

it is like mem part is running at much lower freq then datapath part in processor, each part has a seperate clock, which is refered to as local clock. But there exists a system clock which is global clock . As to SOC,on chip peripheral like uart , sdmmc runs different clocks then the MPU. Each of the peripheral has a local clock for its functional use. But there is a global clock which as the root of them .

this structure is DIVIDE ASIC CHIP into many little blocks,

each block has it's own local clock tree and operating frequency,

the communication between blocks use global frequency to

realization. also called GALS(global synchronization local asynchronous),

it's a temdency for asic design in today and in the future.
