Can I use TRIAC used in the dimmers for lamps and fans to produce 12V DC?

Can I use TRIAC used in the dimmers for lamps and fans to produce 12V. Ripple factor is not so important. I just want to charge a 12V battery with 10A current.
I will select the firing angle at a point such that the average value of the output will be 12V. Then I will use full wave rectifier. Is it possible? I think TRIAC used in this way is analogous to SCR. But are there any pitfalls?

12V may be to low voltage for this application.
Better use a transformer, say 220-15V, use this dimmer/triac on the primary and a diode or bridge on the secondary.
So your regulation will occure through primary...
 

15v transformer to charge a 12v battery?

I think it's another idea for transformerless power supply. You can try it with resistive load before working with the Batt. And please let us know your experiment's result.

Yea, coupling batteries via rectifie-bridgein serial to 2 KW heater...

don't try this depend of risk for electrical chock and destroy batteries
with overcharging...

but... check transformer temperature, is increasing to burning
temperature very quickly in half/quart load depend of high
peak current and heating magnetic cores depend of overtones
from Triac...

and for charger, is very small adjusting area for charging regulation
depend of only small part of voltage peak value is usable
to charging batteries - and give very high peak current if
you want 10 amp avarange current..



batteries is not same as heater, halogen light, or resistive loads,
is this elecrical character more simular as big Zenerdiode
around 13 Volt.

I want a Power Supply that will be free from the bulky transformer. Isn't my idea equivalent to a Switch Mode Power Supply. I am going to experiment with it. If someone has experience or more suggestions please share them with me.
 

12v transformerless power supply

There are battery chargers on the market that don't use transformers while being driven by brdige SCRs. However, they use huge inductors (not smaller in physical size than step-down transformer) to limit the impulse current created by phase-controlled SCR ..
And, your idea is NOT equivalent to SMPS ..
 

12v triac dc

Hi
It needs alot of theoretical, practical experience to use triac for charging batteries i.e supressing transients, limiting current,making protection against dV/dt ....etc.
i sauggest to use Farchild off-line smps (www.fairchildsemi.com),Also I suggest to use forward converter.Fairchild has 3 terminals smps,fortanately I do not remember the part nomber.
