When i am measuring house ac , when i have one probe in the hot , and the other probe in nothing just in the air , not connected to anything the meter shows up as 10v ac? if one probe is in neutral it doesn't do that? and another question why is ground and neutral connected together, on a meter it comes up as the neutral and ground is shorted together? but isn't neutral and ground suppose to be connected together in some way?

When one probe is in 'hot' line and other not connected , the meter picks up the induced voltages in the surrounding.
The meter has very high input impedance and it is eq to open i/p.

On the second part , it is not clear from the post whether you want to know why neutral and ground is connected together or anything else?

Post the gnd and neutral understanding difficuly in detail.

Hi,

To measure electrical values you alwayneed to connect at least two wires.
One at the point of interest, the other as the reference of this signal.

Like if you want to measure distance: you need to define a starting point and an end point.

Shorted = connected

I do want to know why ground and neutral is connected together
