Dear All, I have 2 boards. One is intel based Single board computer and other is our designed FTDI converter board. All of them is common ground. We make supply as 12v for pc side and 5v for ftdi boards. We have a switch to turn on/off power and it is connected to ground. When we close it, it tries to power from 12v to 5 system. What you suggest to solve this problem. Just use diode or any other better solution.

Thanks
Best Regards.

Hi,

I don´t like the idea of switching the GND of a power supply.
Usually the GND is connected to other IO and it should not be openend.

--> switch the +12V line.

If you need a more detailed answer you need to give more detailed information.
* Other IO
* where does the 5V come from
* where does the 12V come from
* is there a fixed connection between both boards or can they be disconnected? Incouding GND and 12V, 5V?

--> a simple draft with the connections and a brief description could be very informative.

Klaus

Dear KlausST,

We have 4 ftdi chip on board and 2 of them convert to RS232 with MAX232D and 2 of them used for GPS and GPRS module.
There is fixed connection between boards with 2.00mm connectors. 5V and 12V comes from SMPS but sometimes they supplied from Lead Acid Battery with LM2576-5V and LM2576-12V.

5V supplies the FTDI board and there is 3.3V regulator for GPS and GPRS module. 12V only supply the Single Board PC.

Thanks
Best Regards.
