Hi,

Anyone has any repair experience with VMI high voltage power supplies? Standard models are 40KV and 50KV with about 100-200 uA. These units are sealed with a dark gray color stuff I don't know what is it. I guess it is some good quality silicon insulator. Anyone knows the exact name of this stuff for ordering purpose or any company offers these stuff? It seems is a some kind of glue like the silicon glue for aquarium. Anyway I have one and it starts spark when I enable the high voltage. Any similar experience in repairing would be appreciated. Also if any info or manual or schematic is available of any model or any company possibly will help.

Guess you are talking about XRS040N100 and XRS050N200? **broken link removed**

The potting compound is most likely two component silicone elastomer, made e.g. by Dow Corning and available from electronics catalog distributors. Alternatively polyurethane elastomer, harder and less easy to cut.

Maybe someone has a schematic, but I don't expect VMI to publish it because switch mode power supplies are rarely intended for third party repair, potted devices even less.

In some cases it might be possible though, e.g. if simple components like filter capacitors or HV rectifiers are defective.

As above, its almost certainly silicone rubber potting compound.

I believe you can buy a solvent that readily dissolves this, but it may also attack or destroy some internal components, particularly capacitors, but not always.

I have used this special purpose solvent myself, (provided by my employer) but have no idea of what it actually was or who makes or supplies it.
Some internet research along those lines may be of help.

Yes I am talking about not exactly but a similar model as XRS040N100. I found what is the potting silicon. As mentioned above it is two compound low viscosity silicon. But still haven't got my hands on schematic or a block diagram of these power supplies or similar ones. I had to do my best to try repair this power supply. Any help/advice will be appreciated.

Cheers
Steve
