Hi - I have the fluke 83 series 3 meter which has a faulty capacitance mode where it reads O.L on any capacitor. Bizarrely however, it gives a reading when nothing is connected to it and also measures when I touch my hands across the terminals. Can anyone shed any light on what could be the fault?

What does the manual say is the MAX capacitance that the meter can measure?

What are the values of the caps that you are trying to measure?

Is the answer to the first question less than the answer to the second?

Good first question - I am not sure as I do not have the manual but I am only trying to read a 330uF capacitor (both good and bad ones) which shouldn't be beyond the realms of a good quality meter like this. What do you think?

Usually meters like these are limited to 20µF or so in range. I would say, besides you not having the manual (use the internet, Luke), that you are trying to measure too big of a cap.

I understand - where can I find the user manual? I have done a few searches now but keep getting the service manual only....thanks for your advice

Hi,

Fluke is a high quality brand.
Usually those companies have all documents available.

80 Series V Users Manual: **broken link removed**
And a lot if other documents...
