What are the advantage of having Square Contact & via in Layout?

In my opinion it is more an aesthetic matter than actually related to any benefit.
The tracks I route allways enclose the whole vias within it.

I agree with Andre, aesthetics only.
Possibly making them easier to see, or possibly giving that teensy weensy more land material in the corners.

Absolutly no point in using square vias these days, may have been 20 years ago - not now.

I'll sometimes use square vias for test points as they are easier to spot. I normally wouldn't use them otherwise as you can wrap a trace around a round via a bit more tightly than you can a square via.
