Burnt ICD2 due to 9V AC power

I just bought a ICD2 from Olimex and tried to use with serial cable (RS232), because my old computer does not have a USB. the usr guide says that then it need a power supply. I could not find any infomation about what kind supply it will take but from the board near the socket, I found "9VAC" . So, I connect a 9v AC power to it. right after connection, one resistor near the RS232 socket was burned. I don't know if there are other damages were made by the accident. What is wrong I got? :(

Probably the CPU got zapped .Well you can replace it ,, there are seveal open projects that show you how to program one .Search EDAboard

The plug pack supply that came with my ICD2, says that is is 9V DC 300mA.

So replace the broken resistor, try to find any other broken parts.
Probably electrolytic caps and voltage regs are likely to be fried.
(or see if you can get it fixed under warrenty)

Then try it with a 9V DC supply.

Now that it is 9v DC, why 9VAC is shown near the power socket? Killing me!

An incident of the same nature happened to me as well. I was using the serial port of the computer for communication. Since the voltage levels required are +/-3V to +/-12V, I used a simple potentiometer to provide 6V as the reference (ground pin of the serial port was connected to 6V). The input voltage to the circuit was 12V.
Thus ON state was at +6V and OFF at -6V. This arrangement worked fine with my old computer but when I plugged it to another (NEW) computer, the potentiometer blew out. Maybe RS232 specifications are changed. You may use IC RS232 that supports higher current flows.

Hi,

I never used the Olimex ICD2, but i can tell you that its not ease to burn a PIC!
Try to replace the resistor and do some reverse engineering to see where it was connected to and if something else got fried.
The re plug the DC power line and see if it works.
If not, follow the communication line of the serial and see that it reaches the PIC and also see that you have 5V on the PIC and all the other hardware.
If it fails, you can always talk to olimex and tell them that they have miss led you…
