[SOLVED] Problem with my LAN & Wi-Fi connection to a Tablet

I have a Samsung Tablet - model number SM-T310.
Recently, I had to replace my Router with a Technicolor Gateway - model number TG587n V3.
My PC (O/S is Windows 7) is connected to the Gateway via an Ethernet cable so that works normally.
The Wi-Fi Network Name is visible on the Tablet, but it is locked out. When I press on it, it asks for the password.
But I cannot discover how to set the password in the Tablet for the Wi-Fi connection.
When I access the Gateway from the PC, the Tablet is visible, but its status is shown as “Inactive”.
I assume that the Password has to be set in the Gateway, but I cannot find how to do it in the Gateway manual.
Any assistance will be appreciated.

If I understand right, you are asking how to find the presently used WLAN key?

You'll follow the instruction in the router user manual "3.1.1 Connecting a computer using Wireless". Your tablet may also support automatic registration using the push button on the router front.

Don't know about Tablets, but I have seen at least a few approaches when using computers.

Example, 'A wireless device has become available, do you wish to connect?' (This message window sometimes remains unseen behind other windows. It may help if you hide all windows.) Type in the fields asking for username and password.

Your screenshot shows an address 10.0.0.x. That resembles what I see in a diagnostics window when hooked up to my network storage device (hard drive). It could mean your unit is locked into that mode for the session, until restarted.

I usually see an address 192.168.x.x when it recognizes internet. I'm pretty sure this is what you want to see.

If my computer fails to recognize internet or any other network device, it 'self-assigns' 169.254.x.x. This is what you do not want to see.

Sometimes I have to power down all units, then restart, before I got success at networking (by ethernet or wireless).

Try forcing a re-negotiation between two units, by powering up only the desired two units, but leave all extraneous units turned off.

* On your Windows machine, open Network (lefthand menu column below Libraries-Homegroup-Computer-Network). Right-click on the gateway. Look for your gateway. Win7 displays an option 'View device webpage'. Set options for wireless protocol, channel, networking mode, password, etc.

You may need to shut off all units and restart, to get success.

I'm trying to discover what password I should use when I want the Tablet to access the Internet.
I've read the Manual for both the Tablet & the Gateway. Section 3.1.1 only shows how to connect the cables. I'm well past that point.
Yes, both the Gateway & the Tablet do support auto registration, but I cannot follow the procedure given in the Tablet Manual. I can get part of the way & then the Tablet shows different info to that shown in the Manual & I cannot find how to start the WPS.

I'm able to access the Gateway via a short cut.

I used the Wizard, but it did not allow me the setup the Wi-Fi. So I had to do it manually. As I said earlier, both the Tablet & Gateway have WPS, but the instructions in the Tablet Manual were wrong & I could not find the WPS "button" that had to be pressed within 2 seconds of pressing the WPS button on the Gateway.

If nobody has setup the device differently, most routers will use a default WLAN key. It's usually printed on the type plate.

In case someone has setup an unknown key and administartor password, there should be a reset to factor settings option, e.g. a button that has to be pressed during power-on.

You may have to resort to requiring no password. Set this option from your Windows machine.

Perhaps then your Tablet can get through without a password?

However then your neighbors might be able to piggyback on your wifi without your knowledge. You don't want this. Look for an option which allows you to choose not to broadcast your SSID (network name).

Set your SSID to a name only you know. This may hide your network from public access, but I'm not absolutely certain it's foolproof.

We tried using the "Wireless Key" as the password. It worked.
I thought that this key was to secure the wireless connection & had nothing to do with the password. With our previous Gateway, the password was different to what they called the "Pass phrase".
