Moving into Front End

Hi,

What is the best way to move into the Front End portion of the design process. I am a backend engineer and want to do some front end design work.

thanks
achy

Moving into Front End

there's no best way.
to do front end design is to abstract your mind to higher and higher level. just similar to software design, from assembly -> C -> C++.
you must try to move yourself from PNP->Transistor->gate->RTL->behavior->system level.
Good luck! Actually, front-end design is a competition of thinking instead of the experience in back-end.

Re: Moving into Front End

well u can start coding in Verilog for RTL design and Verification. To start with with u can start with wirting small test cases for a existing design and oberve the simulation and the coding styles

Re: Moving into Front End

Try do find materials with the help of GOOGL
Do small projects such as :UART, I2C controller...
Write the design specification, then coding , do synthesis and write testbench then do simulation.

Moving into Front End

first study verilog hdl, then use some eda software,
do some material job, you will enter the entry!
good luck

Re: Moving into Front End

Hi

Back end is very gud job.
If u want to go Front end.
Try to know Verilog, VHDL and one Simulator tools like Modelsim
then synthesis Xilinx

One Script Language: Perl, Tcl, SHell
Software: C

Moving into Front End

y do u wanna leave Backend job??
r u finding it difficult???
share ur exp

Re: Moving into Front End

I have heard from someone that work in back-end is repetitive..Is it true ?

Moving into Front End

repetitive ? is it true?

is thr any scope to learn ??

after few yrs ..they will not be back end at all as tools wll be automated..
is this statement true?????
plz answer

Re: Moving into Front End

Compared to backend Front end is some what easy.

First start with Digital Basics and Verilog language (study Samir Palnitker book).

After that STA like how to calculate Time period ,max.frequency, setuptime and Holdtime like some basic questions.........

Ok,All The Best.

Re: Moving into Front End

1) study verilog.
2) study basic digital design technique, such as state machine, counter, fifo, etc.
3) begin to do

yes it is very much repitative......

there is very gud scope to learn abt microelctronics, cmos, layouts, spice simulations etc........

i dnt think back end process can be automated.....backend support is always reqd for successfull design considering the crucial step of back-annotation......
pls correct me.....

Moving into Front End

thanks @anantha !

n in ur opinion ..many things can be learnd! but at wht stage ? microelectronics n cmos far to reach ...

it is just learning usage of tool

Re: Moving into Front End

I think the best starting point is not design tool or langage, but algorithm and digital architecture instead.

Re: Moving into Front End

I think maybe I can share my experience on this with you. I had worked about 2 years on the backend, and later worked more than 4 years on the front-end now. I can not support you too much, one good sugguestion from myside is that: Buy a simple FPGA, and write the RTL code to control the related devices in that board will help you greatly! You may have other ways, but I think this is the best.

Re: Moving into Front End

Well wat would be the cost of a simple FPGA board? can u pls mention a simple specification(model name or number kind of) that suits for educational purpose and cost?

well I want to work in backend for some period. wat would be the ideal way to proceed.

Re: Moving into Front End

Hello,

Compared to backend ,Front End is easy in every aspect.i mean Getting job, Interview calls, materials, guidence etc...

In BackEnd even u unable to get interview calls.if u wait 1 or 2 months u will get atleast 1 interview call as a fresher.

but in digital ,not like this..

do u know in india most companies r working as a front end verification(70 to 80%).but only 10 to 15% only working in Backend (Analog & Phisical Design).

I think u understood clearly.

Anyway All The Best.

What ever u choose Be COnfident!!!!

Moving into Front End

u need some sysem knowledge first: computer architecture, network..
Then, eda tools and language
