[SOLVED] 24v to 12v using a R-7812-0.5 converter

Hi!

I am converting 24v to 12v using a R-7812-0.5 converter, but I have some current sensitive components connected to the 12v circuit. So my question is will this converter always send 500mA, or is that dependent on the current consumption in the circuit? Maybe it’s a stupid question, but I am a software guy working on a school project, so I would really appreciate your help.
 

and if your circuit really consumes 500mA from 24v to 12v then be prepared to dissipate (24-12)*0.5=3W of power...
that's more than too important for your 7812-500 !!! will not work more than a few seconds .

Current equals V/R. So for the current to increase either the voltage must be higher or the resistance must be lower (or both).
The 12V converter has a regulated output of 12V when it has no load or when it has its maximum rated load. It is a power source and a power source does not force current to a load, the load takes only as much current as it needs.

Your car battery can provide 400A or more to start a cold engine but the clock in the car does not use 400A all the time. The clock uses only about 10mA or less.
