Transformer on LCD board smells bad.

Hi.

A few days ago i noticed a strong electronic burning smell when i stepped into my office.
After opening the monitor i found that the transformer is hot. By hot i mean near blister inducing temperature. And it smells pretty strong.

I know nothing about electronics. So i tried ordering this part but i cant find it anywhere that will not take 3 months for delivery.

My question is... can i run my monitor without fear while this happens or should i replace it?
The fumes / smell coming out is making me dizzy and nauseous.

This could just be my hypochondriac condition kicking in. who knows
 

If it is overheating and presenting a danger to your health - switch off immediately!

Something is obviously wrong, not necessarily the transformer itself, it might be the 'victim' of another part failing. The transformer number is meaningless, it is almost certainly a house code for that particular monitor and not something you can buy in a store. Tell us what type of monitor it is and what the transformer does, there may be several transformers inside a monitor so knowing which it is will give us a clue. Post a photograph if you can, the more information we have, the better we can advize.

Yea i noticed i cant buy it anywhere except from China.
Specific to the T240 monitor which seems to be big on that transformer failing.

There is nothing you can see on the pictures.
Except you might notice a slight yellow tinge on the green. This is actually like a brownish residue buildup of sorts. Not sure if its the board burning from the heat or what. No caps look swollen, or damaged. All pins look fine.

The only indication i have that its the transformer is that it was really really hot and smelled very bad. Nothing else on the board smells. So finding a possible component that could be causing the transformer to pack up would be almost impossible for someone like me.

That looks like the high voltage inverter transformer for the backlight tubes. Most likely the insulation has broken down between adjacent turns of wire and there is now a shorted loop in one of the windings. It is just possible that one of the blue capacitors nearby has gone short circuit, the backlight tubes are fairly tolerant of wrong voltages fed to them but the inverter producing that voltage may be overloaded badly while trying to maintain the voltage.

You might find it easier to find a complete replacement board than the individual part on it.

Thankfully, LED backlight monitors are immune from the problem!

Hi again.

So after waiting 2 months for the part i eventually replaced the transformer. But after a days usage i am smelling some bad fumes again.
How would i test the other components, specifically the caps you mentioned... i have access to a voltage meter thing... can i just use that to check readings?

Something is seriously wrong here, i was hoping it would just be a bummed transformer. But im not sure if its the case... perhaps the new component just smells bad because its new... its more a of a plastic burn smell... i see the old transformer melted all the plastic inside of itself
