Hi all

How to design a Pulse Transformer? I want to design pulse transformer to drive Gate of a SCR. The minimum gate current required for SCR trigger is 150 mA.

Thanks

The SCR Module I am using is SKKT 162

I don't want to discourage you, but it is best if you purchase a gate transformer than attempting to design it yourself.

Not only you have to meet safety and insulation requirements, but must be able to know core material specification to design for the proper primary volt-second product.

There is a similar thread in this forum, check the advice I'm giving to the poster.

  • Lp will be around 1mH
  • Turns ratio such as 2:1 depends on primary voltage if much higher than Vg and has the advantage of boosting current.
  • You will need magnet wire and tape insulation to withstand a surge of 3kV or 2.5kVdc
  • L*dI = V*dt must be well under the core saturation limits. Bipolar drive gives twice the current over monopolar.
  • Rs or DCR is best to be under 1 Ohm.

I Better read specs again
Gate Trigger Current
Max, Igt:150mA on Newark Site summary (wrong)
Min Igt 150mA dc @25'C in datasheet tgd=1us Ig=1A using 20V @20 Ohm pulse > >300mA at -20'C

Here are some Pulse XFMR's not sure if they will do but DCR is in the ballpark.... L>10mH

Got a good heat sink solution for 0.1°C/W? with water cooling Yet?
