Well tell me excatly which subject ur interested in i shall suggest some interesting topics.. there is VLSI system design, there is VLSI Signal processing, Low power CMOS/VLSI, Analog VLSI, ASIC Design, Analysis design and Simulation implementations n these topics.. the current topics which are hot are generally SOCs.

Computer architecute side is also goin great guns, ummm try computer architecture/VLSI/Embedded systems.

u can do project in image,video processing lot of things are to explore,
then u can look in to physical design aspects of vlsi design

if ur are specific signal processing u can do applications in signal processing
relating power, speed . lot of intersting things are inside it.
