Center Tap Toroidal Transformer Making me problems.

Hi everyone,

I have a center tap toroidal Transformer transformer with 14.5V-0-14.5 (RED BLACK RED) outputs.
the input is 220V AC and the output 14.5V-0-14.5 (RED BLACK RED).
If im just using the black and 1 red wire I get around 16V same as the other red wire. but when I connect them in series to get around 29V the transformer get very hot and make some small sparks and doesnt give me any output voltage. as I said if I'm not connecting 2 of the wire in series, nothing happens and the transformer is happy.
my question is why the transformer shorts out or something? can't I connect the wires in series to get 29V or what?

What are you connecting "in series"? With no load then the output is about 16V from one red secondary wire to the black center-tap wire and there will be another output of about 16V from the other red wire to the black wire. If you want 32V (29V with rated load) then it should be between both red wires then the black wire is not connected to anything.

NEVER connect the two red secondary wires together.

yep your right, I'm such an idiot.
 

I think you connected in parallel.. 8-O

Vout =32 (No load) will be higher than Vout =29 (full load ) using linear load due to internal winding loss.

230Vin/50Hz will give 29Vrms between Red-Red out at 70VA linear load or 2.41 Ohms.

Nonlinear Diode/cap load causes more I²R coil losses thus you must derate 70VA load.

Using PFC chip and buck regulator will linearize the load and get more max power.

But then this massive core was designed for fundamental loads and harmonics (100Hz)
