self tuning controller

Hello experts,
In a control system, what is a self-tuning controller? And if a non-self-tuning controller definitely results in an unstable control system?
Thanks in advance!

A PID controller. is a closed loop servo system. Where you control the position/velocity of an actuator or motor.
The loop is caracterized by the following parameters;
Proportional (P), integral (I), and derivative (D), Which depends on the dynamic properties of the system.
For example. In a position controller, The controller must compute the velocity profile (acceleration, final velocity and deacceleration) to comand a motor to reach a position and stop there.
To tune the controller you see the behaviour of the system. (overshoot, oscillations,etc) and adjust the parameters manualy. to obtain the required or best performance.
A self tuning controller does this automatically and it is able to compensate for changes in the system (mass for example).
I hope that you can understand something from my brief and chaotic explanation.
