I am using Xilinx ISE. I have completed P&R and also generated '.bit' files. I created PROM file with impact.I am able to see the PROM associated with my bitsream file. I saved the file and closed impact. I also have my Platform-II USB cable connected to my borad with FPGA device in it, powered up. What I am not understanding is, if this is all one needs to do or is there any opther step invoeved in saving the circuit to the PROm for the FPGA to work.. How do I know that my program is saved in EEPROM and FPGA is ready to use?

If you programmed the PROM with the mcs/hex file and then power cycle the board, the FPGA should get loaded from the configuration PROM. You can tell if it loaded by the DONE pin going high and or it doesn't what you programmed it to do.
